THREE TYPES OF DOORS TO CONSIDER

The type of door to choose during a remodel, renovation, or new build is first determined by the movement needed within a space.

Did you know there is more than one choice for interior doors? - swing door, pocket door, and barn door. Being flexible with the type of door allows each each space to function to the fullest and enhances the design in each space.

SWING DOOR

The standard door choice and most common. This type of door can range from in-stock to custom and rests on hinges within the door casing. The beauty of the swing door is the variety. Door styles span across each design style - traditional, craftsman, modern, etc. The finish of the hardware selection should flow with the rest of the design, not to mention the countless handle + knob options. This style door is utilized in several ways, doors for privacy that lock, exterior doors, and french doors. French doors are a beautiful addition as most have glass panels that let in natural light and increase the door opening within a space. They are often used in a home office, sitting room, or dining room. Work with your designer to ensure the quality and style of the door will flow well through your home.

POCKET DOOR

Incredibly convenient to save space and can be incredibly finicky. Before going with a pocket door you must know nothing can be installed on the wall the door is housed in. Think art, bathroom wall hardware, outlets, plumbing, etc. Also, this is not a DIY type of project. Please hire a contractor if you are trying to go this route in a finished space. When building, pocket doors need to be planned for accordingly. The beauty of this style door is the sweet surprise it is even there. Pocket doors are useful in tight spaces where a door swing would eat up a lot of square footage or really has no nowhere to go. We have used this style in a closet, private bathroom, laundry room, and pantry. The door itself has an opportunity to surprise and delight by the style chosen. For example, in a laundry room or pantry, the upper half of the door could be glass and the lower portion solid wood. It is unexpected and an opportunity to let in more natural light.

BARN DOOR

The origin of this style is housed in the name. Barn doors were originally designed to help farmers move cattle and other animals in and out of a barn by a sliding door. These beauties have been brought inside and become stunning design features. In order to use this style door, there needs to be enough wall space on the side the door is opening to. The door needs to clear the opening and we go so far as to make sure it clears the door casing too. The horizontal bar hardware must also not be longer than the wall it’s on. If it is, consider minimizing the door opening or shortening the horizontal hardware length. Wood support for the horizontal bar hardware is taken into account when planning the install. Barn door styles can incorporate glass, mirror, solid wood, or decorative panels. The options are really endless! Have fun with this style door because it really is a beautiful design feature and can add much needed color, pattern, and/or warmth into a space.
