DO YOU REALLY NEED THEM?

YES! From an Interior Designer’s perspective, swatches are necessary. Those small squares provide a tactile and visual experience on how a living space begins to come together. They may or may not show the entire pattern, but they will give guidance on color, style, texture, and flow. Our human nature is to touch and feel. Swatches give a small glimpse into what an upholstered piece, cabinetry, etc. will feel and look like. Do you like the feel of leather vs boucle? Do you like the texture of linen vs. cotton blend? Do you want wood flooring to have a raised grain or smooth surface for your feet? The only way to find out is to order the swatch(es). Our advice would be, narrow down your options to two. Too much of a good thing is still too much. If you choose to go retail and make your own selections, vs. an Interior Designer sourcing for you, then take a look at our suggestions below.

OUR SHORT LIST OF RETAIL RECOMMENDATIONS:

PAINT - Sherwin Williams - They offer large and small paint swatches, as well as take home color decks and sample cans of paint. Once you have narrowed down to 2 colors, purchase the sample paint. It is worth it. Paint 2’ x 2’ squares on different walls and see how the color works in the space as the day transitions from light to dark.

FURNITURE - Serena and Lily - We love the calming coastal vibe. The consistency in product color online vs. in-person and quality construction are other reasons this retailer stands out. It is well worth the price point. Samples range from wallpaper, area rugs, fabrics, and upholstery.

AREA RUGS - Shoppe Amber Interiors - We love supporting other designers! Amber’s work is beautiful and quality. Swatches can run $30, but it is worth it to touch the fabric and see the pile. It is a small investment for an item that you will be using for many years to come.
